Sets Your Spirit Dancing

Moving liquid, yes you are just as water
You flow around all that comes in your way
Don't think it over, it always takes you over
And sets your spirit dancing

Kate Bush, "Moving," The Kick Inside, EMI 1978

A lyric about moving liquid is the best metaphor for me because the one single best way to move is to swim.

When did you exercise last?

March 2000

31 March 2000: Registration excuse
30 March 2000: thank-you lunch excuse
29 March 2000: Writing group and staff meeting excuses
28 March 2000: Fitlinxx lesson (I moved more than a ton of weight, ooo.)

27 March 2000: 30' Precor elliptical, resistance 5, ramp 15 (the maximum), plus weights.

26 March 2000:
25 March 2000:

24 March 2000: 30' Precor elliptical and full weight circuit.

23 March 2000: Swam .75K: 250m crawl, then the strap of my goggles snapped. The lifeguard offered me his, but they were way too tight--I have a big head plus a lump of French braid--and I was reluctant to adjust them since they're so fiddly, so I continued with 50m backstroke, 250m breaststroke, and 100m with a kickboard working on my butterfly kick. It's been a long time since I practiced butterfly instead of interrupting a regular long swim with an occasional length of it, my favorite but most inept and demanding stroke. Like five years. Now that my deltoids are stronger, if I can strengthen my abdominals I might actually be able to do a few laps of 'fly. Wheeee!

22 March 2000: 30' Precor elliptical with two 2-lb. handweights, on the older of the two models, which didn't give me the resistance level or incline percentage. Average heart rate ~160, but also the Precor doesn't calculate an average as the Star Trac does. Full weight circuit.

21 March 2000: Ooops

20 March 2000: 30' Precor elliptical trainer at resistance level 12 and 10% incline. Whatever that means. Average heart rate >160. All weights but pull-down. I've lost a lot in the past week (or two) of slacking.

19 March 2000: Walked 3.6 miles

18 March 2000:

17 March 2000: 20' trying to get the rhythm of a Precor elliptical trainer

16 March 2000: 30' StarTrac elliptical with two 2-lb handweights, some weights.

15 March 2000: Abs. That doesn't really count, since it didn't boost my heart rate, but since I haven't done anything else today, and since I don't do enough to my abs, I count it.

14 March 2000: 30' Star Trac elliptical, with two 2-lb. handweights, average heart rate 168, mostly <24' mile--I don't know how that's calculated, I don't breathe that hard running a 15' mile--and >100 strides per minute. Plus all my weights.

13 March 2000: 20' Nordic Track, heart rate ~145, 2.3 miles

12 March 2000:

11 March 2000: Walked 3.6 miles.

10 March 2000: 20' on the Precor elliptical, with two 2-lb. handweights and 10' at 3 mph and 15% incline on the treadmill. Plus row, rear delt, fly, arm curl, and arm extension. This Precor can't be programmed for more than 20'. The other of the two now in the weight room can be programmed to 25', said its user, but that's still not 30'. And I don't seem to get in the same rhythm--on this, only my second try--as on the StarTrac.

9 March 2000: 30' at level 15 on the StarTrac, average heart rate 164, with two 2-lb handweights for 25'. I had been maintaining over 100 strides per minute and a "speed" of less than 23' per mile, so I was fagged at 25'. At 27'30", I picked them up again and finished with them. Plus most of a weight circuit, to make up for yesterday--no row, rear delt, or arm curl.

8 March 2000: Walked 3.6 miles

7 March 2000: 10' on a different elliptical trainer. I don't react well to change and the Y changed. I had been all set on the StarTrac Elliptical Edge and now it has been replaced with two Precor elliptical thingies. I can still use one of two StarTrac in the aerobic gallery, but you know, going upstairs from the locker room to the aerobic gallery and back down to the weight room, instead of having both in the same room on the same floor as the locker room, is such a waste of time! Shocking.

6 March 2000: All weights but arm extensions and curls. Treadmill: 5' at 3 mph and 15% incline. Elliptical: 10' at level 15 with two 2-lb. handweights, then 5' at level 12 with weights, then 7.5' at 12 w/o weights. Four days off matters. So does today's being a fourth Monday.

5 March 2000: Walked 3.6 miles

4 March 2000: Nonetheless I didn't go for walk Saturday.
3 March 2000: Optometrist appointment, so I felt guilty leaving work for 90 minutes anyway, so I didn't leave for another 90' of gym and I felt guilty all weekend.

2 March 2000: Animal aerobics with coworker M. I thought we'd be doing kangaroo hops and elephant stomps and stuff but what happens is the instructor makes you feel like a giraffe and he is a lion (or Newt Gingrich) chasing you. The Y has eight handball courts stacked two by two up four floors of its building. We ran from the gym down one flight to the basement and up three flights to the roof and all the way down to the basement and up, this time two steps at a time, to the roof again, where we did push-ups and dips against the benches of the courts' observation decks. As I described it to RDC, he exclaimed, "He sounds like a drill sergeant!" Did I mention the instructor is a Denver cop?

1 March 2000: 30' elliptical with two 2-lb handweights, full weight circuit

February 2000

29 February 2000:

28 February 2000: 30' elliptical with two 2-lb handweights, Ten, average heart rate 163 and my strides per minute never dropped below 100 (well, maybe: the machine doesn't give you an overall average but cycles through all the stats every 40 seconds or so. Plus a full weight circuit, now doing 20 reps per set with several weights decreased accordingly.

27 February 2000: Walked 3.4 miles

26 February 2000:

25 February 2000: 30' elliptical with two 2-lb handweights, Deadicated, average heart rate 163; plus a full weight circuit.

24 February 2000: 30' elliptical with two 2-lb handweights, Santana's Supernatural, and an average heart rate of 155?, plus 5' cooldown at 15% incline and 3.0 mph.

23 February 2000: 30' elliptical with two 2-lb handweights, heart rate unknown, strides per minute probably ~90-100; plus a full weight circuit.

22 February 2000: Nope

21 February 2000: Ha! Back in the gym for a really bad workout that shredded me like yesterday's spinach. 20' on the elliptical with a significantly lower average strides per minute and no handweights yet my heart rate still averaged 150. A full weight circuit, but I was nearly incapable throughout. Can blowing off for eleven days really do that? I'm still snuffly and coughing, but oof.

17 February 2000:
16 February 2000: Unlikely.
15 February 2000: I'm going to go for a walk. Really. No, really.
14 February 2000: Um, I unpacked and vacuumed.
13 February 2000: Getting up to pee and make myself echinacea tea was exertion enough

12 February 2000: 8904' vertical feet of skiing (which means a lot more than that of horizontal traversing).

11 February 2000:

10 February 2000: 30' elliptical, heart rate averaged at 152, with two 2-lb handweights, 25 ab weight-thingies at 50 lbs and 25 back extensions at 75, plus 100 crunches and some stretching.

9 February 2000: 20' elliptical, heart rate forgotten, full weight circuit

8 February 2000: 8' on a treadmill at a 10% incline, 3.2 mph, with two 2-lb. handweights, about 125 bpm, and 22' on the elliptical, fat-burner level 15, heart rate 153 bpm; 100 crunches; plus back extensions and abdominal presses or whatever those are called.

7 February 2000: Additional weights plus 15' at level 12 manual, 151 bpm.

6 February 2000: Snowshoed 4.5 miles

5 February 2000:

4 February 2000: 30' at level 15 "fat burner," averaging 95-100 strides per minute, average heart rate 160 bpm (80%), 50 crunches, a full weight circuit.

3 February 2000:

2 February 2000: 30' at level 15 ("fat burner") on the elliptical trainer with two 2 lb. handweights and a full weight circuit. Heart rate unknown, but probably over 150 on average.

1 February 2000: One-hour step class. Average heart rate unknown, but probably over 160 on average, peaking at at least 172 bpm.

January 2000

31 January 2000: 30' elliptical, level 15 "fat-burner," with 2 2-lb handweights, average heart rate 155; full weight circuit.

30 January 2000: Skied 12,500 vertical feet. That's not just two miles. That's an awful lot of zigzagging traverse to drop a proportionate number of vertical feet. Plus you have to count that while a good skier works with gravity, I fight it every inch of the way.

29 January 2000:

28 January 2000: A full weight circuit, 100 crunches, and five minutes on a treadmill at 4 mph and an elevation of 5, whatever that means.

27 January 2000:

26 January 2000: 30' on the elliptical trainer, level 15 "fat-burner," with 2 2-lb. handweights, average heart rate 149; full weight circuit and 100 crunches.

23 January 2000: Snowshoed 5 miles

22 January 2000:

21 January 2000: Thirty minutes on the elliptical trainer (level five, "fat-burner" program), plus a weight-circuit
