20 November 2000: ParallelsWhen I gave Bee Season (whose author is Myla, not Myra, Goldberg) back to Haitch Sunday, she already knew I didn't like it. That's only mostly true. Up to the first bee is good, and then the last section is good again. The middle bit about which I did most of my complaining I think just filled up pages. Aaron looked for something in his chanting that Eliza found through her permutations. The parallels between the two types of meditation were interesting. Today I read some of Amazon's customer reviews about the His Dark Materials books. One misguided person liked only the bits where Lyra uses the alethiometer. I drew a parallel I hadn't before, between Lyra with her golden compass and Eliza with her permutations, the ability of the children to reach a trance-like state. What else. Saturday we helped SPM and JJM move. I had expected to envy their house, which is larger than ours, but happily I prefer my own floor plan and how much less work ours needs. Of course, theirs needed more than ours three months ago when they bought it; they move a lot faster. The envy will come, even if I still prefer my floor plan. They also have a lot of nice stuff. I would like some rugs, myself, but how do you decide? There are so many that might work. Unlike couches, I don't have strong opinions about any of them. And a dining table. And chairs. Particularly because Clove and Dexy asked about Thanksgiving again. But that's Sunday night. Saturday night we went out with the nascent Denver No Kidding chapter at a restaurant of (let me be clear) someone else's choice, a Marriott restaurant in the Tech Center (an office park) that, on a Saturday night, was nearly empty. On the off chance I ever get to know these people, I'll restrain myself. So much for that. Sunday Haitch and I shopped. She power-shopped. I bought a tin soldier cookie cutter. I'm way out on the edge here. Sunday night we determined that we are having six or maybe seven to dinner on Thursday, and therefore... I have a house to clean, windows and heating vents to paint, furniture to buy, exercise to do, a fridge to degunk, a cockatiel cage to sanitize (as I do weekly, suuuuure)... peace out
