18 June 2000: Father's Day

I have to call my father sometime today. He might be in Connecticut with his sister, though. DMB called us this morning and I wished JJT a happy Father's Day, which might scandalize my father but which was meant out of courtesy and not out of any step-father-in-law paternal confusion. Also RDC called his grandfather at his "home"--warning me that he was about to start yelling--but his aunt and uncle had already collected him. Just a few minutes ago his aunt called here and I talked to Grampa G--- before RDC could clean off his brush.

I think he knew who I was.

I went back to my painting, smiling, while RDC took the phone. RDC encouraged his grandfather to come out to Denver and help us paint. He had to repeat himself, of course, and nearly yell, and overall his half of the conversation reminded me of when people have to scream into Tante Louise's ear trumpet, "Evangeline has been a VERY NAUGHTY GIRL." Was Mrs. Oliphant's name Evangeline? Was the deaf aunt Louise? I scampered downstairs to look. I have found the other three books but not The Saturdays, so I had best scurry right back upstairs to painting. The sooner the study gets done, the sooner all my Melendys will be close at hand.

(later)

No, Evangeline is Cuffy's first name (that's part of the "Loving Heart" clue of Spiderweb for Two). Damn. Well, I must paint anyway.

Also, what was Peter's turtle's name in Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing? I was trying to remember all yesterday. His eventual dog is, of course, Turtle, but who was the turtle?
