Walking up to the elevator today, I followed a splay-footed man in severe high-water trousers, in murky glasses and unkempt tufts of hair. Unkindly, my mind summoned a name: Uriah Heep. Then, because I deserved ridicule for being needlessly cruel (if only mentally), I abused myself for not knowing which novel he appears in. I know Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities well enough that I didn't wonder about them, and I just listened to Hard Times last year. Which leaves the only other Dickens I've read, David Copperfield. I should read Bleak House.

Tomorrow I take the final exam of my class. Hooray, I shall be glad to be done with it. I have added to my information base, but have I increased my understanding? I understand more which rights the 5th and 14th Amendments protect and how each amendment is invoked in legal proceedings. I have read Webster v. Reproductive Health Services and Planned Parenthood v. Casey in full and come to appreciate the nuances of codified law. Investigating women's treatment in prisons has shown me another way to grapple with the issue of liberal and radical feminisms, of equal and equitable treatment of men and women.

Some members of the Publishing Department came to our staff meeting today to discuss artwork for the upcoming issues of the magazine, of which we are writing the bulk. The theme of the artwork will be The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Now, I wonder how many people will get the characters if they're not in the archetypal Tenniel or profane and ubiquitous Disney images. Also, since all the characters are portmanteaux, I wonder whether our nonpartisanship might be threatened by readers' inferences. Anyway, one editor had brought a volume containing both, and we browsed through it. Someone else in Fiscal and I noticed the same thing at once: Camille Paglia wrote the introduction to this edition! I have to find and read that.
